Spring Cleaning Essentials

Remedies For Overlooked Spots Around the House

It's spring cleaning season! Inviting nature and air into the house can bring de-stressing benefits and help clear our minds. Here are a few tips for each room that you can tackle while staying home.

The Spruce-Up

Bedrooms

A few things you can do to show respect is rotate your mattress every now and then, wash any bedding and pillowcases in hot water, and declutter the drawers and closets.

Don't forget to sift through every room and drawer for a good sorting. Make piles of “keep,” “toss”, and “donate” items throughout the house to commit to the disposal. The usual suspects to include for being tossed or donated can include any gadget, clothing, or canned food you haven’t touched in a year.

Kitchens

Another popular spot for build-up is the fridge. Go through any food storage and wipe the shelves of expired or freezer-burned grub. Then take a warm, soapy sponge and buff up the inside like it’s a Cadillac.

Time for the sink. Once you get those dirty dishes out of the way, sprinkle baking soda onto a sponge and remove growing bacteria. Doing this frequently will help the buildup of odors.

Bathrooms, The Final Frontier

Beyond the toilet and bathtub scrub-down, don’t forget the mold. Mold can grow on shower tiles and in the grout around them. Bleach is useful for killing mold in grout and fading away mold stains, but it may also require some good toothbrush scrubbing to get the job done. Clean the shower doors too, or just toss the curtain in the washing machine.

Second, look up. Get on the step stool and remove the fan vent covers. Wash them in hot, soapy water and dry them with a clean, lint-free cloth. Wipe the fan blades with a dry cloth or a vacuum dust brush.

Ease-up Allergies

A warm spring breeze means pollen and mold, which can also mean seasonal allergies. Keep these cleaning tricks in mind to save yourself from the headaches:

  • Vacuum once or twice a week with a HEPA filter.

  • Use a damp cloth and mop when cleaning. They'll trap allergens instead of knocking them into the air.

  • Don't shampoo carpets. The leftover moisture could cause mold growth or increase dust mites.

  • Wash sheets weekly in hot water to kill off any dust mites.

  • Clean outside entryways. Sweep or vacuum!
