Prepping Your Home for Spring

Spring is officially here! The first day of spring was March 20, and hopefully that beautiful spring weather has arrived at your home. As we dive into the new season, it’s a great idea to start prepping your home for warmer weather. We've got a handy guide for things you can do to prepare for springtime.

Spring Cleaning

  • Clean dusty spaces: A small but mighty way to begin spring cleaning is dusting spaces around the house you don’t often touch! This may be empty corners, baseboards, shelves, fan blades or anything else that accumulates dust while you spend your winter indoors.
  • Defrost freezer: Defrosting can help make your freezer more effective and gives you the opportunity to rearrange your frozen food items as you remove everything and put it back in!
  • Disinfect: Disinfecting can make your home feel fresh and ready for spring. Get rid of all the germs that may have accumulated over cold and flu season by disinfecting countertops in the kitchen and bathrooms, doorknobs, light switches, and any other heavily touched surface around the house.
  • Floor care: Vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping are great ways to clean your house and prepare for spring. Vacuuming rugs, carpets, and even hardwood or tile floors, as well as sweeping and mopping, has the added benefit of providing clean air around your home. Hang your non-washable rugs outside for some clean air.
  • Wardrobe swaps: Though this may not feel like cleaning, making wardrobe swaps to prepare for warmer weather can be a great spring cleaning strategy! It’s a good time to pack away your heavy sweaters and fleece socks and make room for shorts and short sleeves for this spring and summer.
  • Replace air filters: A large part of home maintenance is replacing air filters, and this is something to do each time warm weather approaches. Generally, you should replace your air filters at least every six months.

Change Decorations

  • Replace winter décor with spring: Heavy drapes and other winter decorations can remind you of colder weather! Now is a great time to replace your winter décor with spring, adding in flowers, natural light, and bright colors.
  • Swap out candles: Though it has a small effect on the overall house, swapping out winter-scented candles for floral or spring-smelling candles can help you feel the transition to springtime even more!
  • Change bedding: Swap out your heavy comforter and thick sheets for a lighter blanket with lightweight sheets. As an added bonus, choosing sheets and blankets with brighter colors can make your bedroom feel more spring-y!

Prepare the Outdoor Areas

  • Gardening: As warmer weather approaches, it’s a great time to get your garden started! Early spring is the perfect time to plant flowers and vegetables to grow throughout the summer. If you planted annuals last year, they’ll probably be blooming soon.
  • Uncover and prep patio furniture: If you prepared for winter by storing or covering your patio furniture, it’s a great time to bring that back out and uncover it! It can also help to clean the furniture as it’s being reinstated – whether with a hose or a cloth.
  • Repel Bugs: Spraying for bugs is a must-do when prepping for spring! This is the perfect time for bugs to make their way back into your home, so a good spray around the interior and exterior areas in your home can keep those pests away.
  • Pressure/power wash: Your home may or may not have accumulated dirt and debris during the winter months. Either way, pressure washing your home and driveway can help you prepare for warmer weather again.
  • Prepare mower: Springtime means it’s time to start mowing your lawn again! Be sure to verify your lawnmower is in great working condition, as well as any other lawncare items you use.

Spring is a time of revival! While there are plenty of ways to prepare for spring, these are some effective things you can do to spruce and brighten your living space, perform necessary weather-related maintenance, and prepare your outdoor area for changes.
