Buying a home comes with plenty of questions, especially when it comes to credit.

If you're exploring a USDA home loan, you may be wondering: What credit score do I actually need to qualify?

The answer isn't always as straightforward as one number.

USDA loans are designed to help eligible homebuyers purchase homes in qualifying rural and suburban areas, often with no down payment required. And while credit is an important part of the mortgage process, your credit score is only one piece of the bigger picture.

Here's what you should know.

Why Does Your Credit Score Matter?

Your credit score helps lenders understand how you've managed credit over time.

When reviewing your mortgage application, lenders may look at factors such as:

Your history of making payments on time
The amount of debt you currently have
How much of your available credit you're using
The length of your credit history
Recent credit activity

FICO scores for mortgages generally range from 300 to 850. A higher credit score can demonstrate a strong history of managing credit, but it isn't the only thing that matters when applying for a mortgage.

At Flat Branch, we know that a number on a credit report doesn't always tell the whole story.

Is There a Minimum Credit Score for a USDA Loan?

The USDA does not establish one universal minimum credit score that applies to every borrower and lender. However, many lenders use 640 as an important benchmark when reviewing USDA loan applications.

A credit score of 640 or higher may make the application process more straightforward and can help borrowers meet certain automated underwriting requirements.

But what if your credit score is below 640?

That doesn't necessarily mean homeownership—or even a USDA loan—is out of reach.

Depending on your complete financial situation and the lender's guidelines, borrowers with lower credit scores may still have options. In these situations, additional documentation or a more detailed review of your financial profile may be required.

That's why it's important not to rule yourself out based on your credit score alone.

What Else Do Lenders Look at for a USDA Loan?

Qualifying for a USDA home loan involves more than just your credit score.

Your lender will also review several other parts of your financial picture, including:

Your Income

USDA loans have household income limits based on where you're buying and the size of your household. Your income must fall within the program's eligibility guidelines.

Your Debt-to-Income Ratio

Your debt-to-income ratio, often called your DTI, compares your monthly debt payments to your monthly income. This helps lenders determine whether your new mortgage payment fits comfortably within your overall financial situation.

Your Employment and Financial History

Lenders will review your employment history, income stability, and overall ability to repay the loan.

The Home You're Buying

USDA loans are designed for homes in eligible areas. While many people hear the word "rural" and picture farmland, eligible locations can include small towns, suburban communities and areas just outside major cities.

The home must also meet USDA property eligibility requirements.

Can You Get a USDA Loan With Bad Credit?

Having less-than-perfect credit doesn't automatically mean you can't qualify for a USDA loan.

Every borrower's situation is different.

If your credit score is below 640, a mortgage professional can review your complete financial picture and help you understand what options may be available. In some cases, borrowers may need to provide additional information about their credit history or demonstrate other positive financial factors.

The most important thing? Don't assume you can't buy a home before talking with a lender.

We've seen plenty of borrowers who thought their credit would prevent them from becoming homeowners discover they had more options than they expected.

How Can You Improve Your Credit Before Applying?

If you're hoping to buy a home in the future, taking steps to strengthen your credit can help put you in a better position.

Here are a few places to start:

Pay your bills on time. Payment history can play an important role in your credit profile.
Pay down existing debt. Reducing credit card balances and other debts may help improve your overall financial picture.
Avoid opening unnecessary new accounts. Taking on new credit before applying for a mortgage can sometimes affect your credit and debt-to-income ratio.
Check your credit report for errors. Reviewing your report can help you identify inaccurate information that may need to be addressed.

And before making any major financial changes, it's always a good idea to talk with a mortgage professional about your specific situation.

Why Consider a USDA Loan?

For eligible borrowers, a USDA loan can offer some significant benefits.

Depending on your qualifications, USDA loans may offer:

No down payment requirement
Competitive interest rates
Flexible credit considerations
The ability to finance an eligible home in a qualifying area

For many homebuyers, especially those looking outside major metropolitan areas, a USDA loan can be a valuable path toward homeownership.
